Capturing a child's personality on film...this can be both a challenging and enjoyable way to photograph children.
Instead of just simply filming the circumstances, try to catch a child's personality on a still frame.
Come again?
If you have a really cheerful and energetic little boy that is playing in a sprinkler, or with bubbles, instead of trying to capture a child playing, try and capture a very energetic young boy. When someone who does not personally know the child, look at a picture of that child, what does that person think the child must be like? Try for a picture when your subject has broad grins and shining eyes that whisper of laughter. Catch him in the act of running, or jumping....Oh! Endless possibilities!!!
Let's say you have a very quiet little girl with a sweet disposition, and say this little girl is picking flowers, and making little bouquets and placing them in her hair. Try to get a picture of her (contrary to popular belief looking at the camera is by no means a must) with a simple sweet smile, looking tenderly at a flower in her hand. Catch her at a time when she looks especially gentle, and sweet.
Think of these things when taking pictures of people in general but especially children. Look for opportunities to put into practice this concept. This often leads to very pleasing pictures.
