The Pool, Sprinklers, and Timing
Taking pictures of people in the pool can also be lots of fun. Especially if your subjects frequently jump into the pool. I like to to get "cannonball" pictures where if you time it just right you can catch them either in midair, hovering over the water, or with their head about to go under water, and a tidal wave all about them.
With pool pictures, timing is everything. If you can't do a very quick shutter release on your camera--and often times even if you can--you have to anticipate the moment and take it before it actually happens, this takes lots of practice, but be patient. In the last couple of years I've learned the technique of timing and am greatly satisfied with the results I get. So don't give up, but practice. What's the worst that can happen? You get better?
Just in general, pool pictures generally have better colors, contrast, and over all look to them than most non-water pictures. And because pool water is very clear you can still easily see underwater swimmers while still above water-so a high tech underwater camera is not required. :)
If you don't have a pool in your yard or easy access to a pool with modest swimmers :) , sprinklers also make pleasing pictures. I took some neat pictures of my sister and two brothers running through a old sprinkler we had found in the yard. Since at head height the water from the sprinkler is more dispersed than it is at the base of the sprinkler people running through the water are showered with water, but the water does not hide the person's face. If you time it right you can get them just as they hit the sheet of water. Their face is in focus where you can easily see their expression as they hit the sprinkler, but you can also see the little water drops all around and dripping off of them.
I personally love timed shots and have learned several techniques in the last few years. Other things that require a timed shot are fireworks, sports, go-cart riders, fast moving animals, and other things that at normal shutter speeds would be blurred or missed. Have fun, timed shots cross over into many areas of photography!
